Snow Day Mole Hot Chocolate
Snow days are magic.
Glaringly white powder reflecting sunshine, flying headfirst on whatever "sled" you've cobbled together, laughing too hard to steer as your collar traps melting snow, spontaneous battles with tenuous alliances and snowballs that explode on impact. Mundane worries dissolve as quickly as the resolve to run all the way up the hill.
Our sledding crew consisted mostly of old friends of James, and was about as goofy as a sleep-deprived improv team. There was a lot of collapsing in the snow (whether laughing or acting out dramatic deaths). Regrettably, we never got a photo of the group's "sled" collection, but there was a bent baking tray, a trash can lid, and two lightning-bolt shaped sheets of foil-taped cardboard. James and I took speed gold with our ugly double-trashbagged amazon box, 'cause engineering.
Obviously, snow days demand hot chocolate. The recipe below might not be a kid's favorite. It's richly dark, thick, lightly sweet, and savory. Don't expect Nesquik and it might become your new favorite thing too.
2 tbsp toasted pumpkin seeds
2 tbsp unsweetened dried coconut
3-5 Mejdool dates, pitted
1 2/2 tbsp cacao powder
1 tsp lacuma powder
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/8 tsp: chipolte pepper, smoked paprika, cumin, ginger
1 1/4 Cups very hot water
Add all ingredients to a high powered blender and blend on high until smooth and frothy.
Makes two small servings.
*This is tagged as "active" because I really do think that it's a good drink after a day outside. If you want to drink it immediately after a workout, I recommend dialing back on the cocoa powder, increasing the water and reducing or eliminating the coconut.
