Gingerbread Latte

This is some seriously old stuff here, like ... March 2015 old... from a prior (and very short) blog-life and I'm moving it to here because I think more people should get this recipe. I didn't bother to edit the post.


This started as a post on that most polarizing of holidays, but I'm incurabley tardy, so happy early March.

So many people have strong black-and-white blue-and-red opinions on Valentine's Day but, I'm more grey. Sure, the hyper-commercial, stress inducing, competitive public displays of affection aren't really helping anyone, but the original premise is sound. Stop whatever you're doing, and tell whoever you love, that you love them (and maybe do something nice). While you're at it, try expanding your definition of holiday worthy love.

Unfortunately, the people I love can't all be convinced to follow me from city to city so I can have them around. Pittsburgh? Anyone? The weather is great this time of year.

So iPhone-headphones conversations-while-walking-or-cooking are awesome, and Skype is awesome and texting/snapchat will keep you feeling sort of connected, but let's be real, it's easy to get caught up with all the stuff and chaos of everyday life and forget to keep in touch. And you can't actually give anyone a hug over snapchat.

So regardless of what Russell Stover and Hallmark have done with it, Valentine's is still a good reminder of what we've forgotten. And though I haven't figured out teleportation yet, sharing this recipe is basically like sharing a hug.

It was inspired by a long (solo 😓) run in this:

And worse, and ended with me cold to the point of almost crying in a kitchen bare of my go-to recovery shake ingredients (cocoa & dates). Hot, creamy and unapologetically spicy, this will defrost frozen hearts and knumb fingers. It's also Lisa-approved!


Blend until smooth and frothy:
3 tbsp hemp hearts
1 tsp ground ginger
1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
1/8 tsp ground cardamom
pinch of ground cloves
1 1/2 cup hot water
1 1/2 - 2 tbsp unsulfured blackstrap molasses

*a high speed blender is best but your run of the mill version can soldier through

If you're lucky enough to have somebody to share with close by, double the recipe, if not, sit down with your mug of liquid awesome, and write some honest-to-goodness paper letters. Everyone loves mail (and I'm still working on this...)
