Having a comfortable bed is one of the main features we focused on when designing our van conversion. We wanted to both fit side-by-side, have room from head to toe, and be able to sit up/lounge on the bed in comfort. We also wanted to make the bed out of materials we could trust to come from good sources. In the end, we purchased four dog beds (yep...) from Savvy Rest, which is the same company that makes Eva's normal sized organic latex mattress. The four separate mattresses were also conveniently exactly the combined outer dimensions we wanted to fit the previously mentioned requirements.

Due to the size of our kitchen area, and location of the toilet, we designed the front section of the bed to slide back about 14" to provide access to the the toilet and extra floor space. This decision makes it take a few steps to get to the toilet, but it's not that big of a deal. If we did it again, we might shuffle the location of the toilet around for easier access.

The bed framing and support is pretty simple. The platform is two 3/4 ply sheets screwed together. We placed this on top of two ledgers running along each side of the platform and the vertical dividing walls for the trunk, cooler space, and pull-out drawer. The slide out portion of the bed, as shown in the pictures, is simply 3/4 ply placed on top of a set of bars that slide out of the platform. It took us much to long to decide on this slide out design, but it worked out in the end! David gave us some extra assistance on design and construction, which made it all possible.
